Introduction to Abigail Adams Blog

Abigail Adams was born more than 250 years ago, but her opinions were way ahead of her time. At a time when women had little education and were not encouraged to have any opinions at all, Abigail had an opinion about everything, and she made it known.

She was always her husband, John’s, most trusted advisor, as he moved from lawyer to ambassador to vice-president to president. Although she never attended school, she was well-educated for a woman of her time. Her parents taught her and she had access to her Grandfather Quincy’s extensive library.

Abigail and John were apart for many years during their marriage. When he was gone, all the work fell to Abigail. She managed the farm, took care of the four children and even made some money with a small business. Her letters kept John informed of events at home. If Abigail were alive now, I’m sure she’d have definite opinions about events in the news today. And I’m sure she wouldn’t hesitate to make those opinions known.

I’m a retired teacher and a freelance writer and photographer. Enslow published my young adult biography of Abigail Adams, as well as my other four biographies. I’ve also had five books on history and geography published. Other than writing, my favorite pastimes are photography, scrapbooking and birding.
